Family style Tai Chi Chuan - beginners |
Sitting
meditation |
The top of the
head should be level and (eventually) have a feel as if it is
being drawn upward. |
That means you
need your neck to be straight and tuck the chin back (toward
your neck) about |
an inch. You do
NOT really need your eyes and ears but it takes most people
three or four months |
to be able to
ignore them. If you want to close your eyes, that's fine. If you
leave your eyes open, |
fccus on either
nothing or something far away. If you notice a lot of saliva in
your mouth that is |
normal.
Generally, it is recommended that you just swallow it (slowly
and carefully). The world |
will not end if
you decide to spit the saliva out - we suggest having a cup
handy (add to pack list). |
Next, you want
the shoulders level and slightly tucked backwards and downward.
This is to help |
align the spine
and expand the lungs for deep breathing. The amount of shoulder
movement |
depends somewhat
on what must be done to acquire a comfortable placement of your
hands on your |
knees. So a
little relaxation of the shoulders and keep the elbows lightly
tucked against the ribs. |
|
The tip of the
middle finger (acupuncture point Pericardium 9) goes about an
inch in from the |
leading edge of
knee and touches the Stomach 34 point. The tip of the thumb is
Lung 20 - it |
touches Spleen 10
on the inside of the thigh. The tip of the index finger is Large
Intestine 1 - it |
touches Kidney
10. The last two fingers are somewhat more complicated - they
are aiming for |
Gall Bladder 32
which is likely along the pants seam. We'll see this point again
in standing. |
On the little
finger we have Heart 9 and Small Intestine 1. On the ring finger
we have Triple |
Warmer 1. That's
three points on two fingers unlikely to be the same length -
close enough is |
close enough. |
