Shown
above is a classic model 1911 pistol. The original grips and
sidings (red stars) were replaced by pieces from ReCover
Tactical on both sides in order to add a modest Picatinny rail
attachment area ahead of the trigger (here to the left of the
trigger) in order to accommodate a targeting laser. In this case
we wished to experiment with a dual laser - a blue laser and a
purple laser. Personally, I prefer an all-black gun as well as
all-black magazines. To our older, male eyes, in daylight the
blue laser is satisfactory (but not more than that) and the
purple laser was too faint. To the despair of my pistol-loving
friends, I regard pistols as a tertiary weapon whose role is to
help me get to my long gun. That said, there are certainly
a few tactical scenarios where a pistol is a good or even the
best first choice. I found adding a tactical flashlight capable
of 1,000 lumens or more to off-balance the pistol too much and
to rule out a great many holsters. There is something of a
debate about laser color for this sort of weapon with advocates
of a red laser asserting easier adaptability at night while
advocates of a green laser asserting longer range. The effective
range is probably 20 to 30 yards so the choice of color is
likely to be a personal preference. I have not
been able to imagine a scenario where two colors at the same
time (as this attached device is capable of) would be useful.
Likewise, I would recommend one color (it is easy enough to swap
out the laser) so there is no precious time spent deciding which
color or colors and no time spent fumbling for a second on-off
button. Note that the laser battery must be recharged - cannot
be swapped. |
