Between the hammer and the
anvil: the Jordan River not only
marks Israel's eastern border,
but is also a fair indicator of the
northern continuation of the
East African Rift. Note the
cluster of earthquakes along the
southern edge of the Sinai
Peninsula (bottom; center). The
instability of the Aegean Arc to
the northwest is of far greater
concern as a tsunami from near
Cyprus (large collection of
colored dots in the upper left)
would be smashing Haifa within
30 minutes. That's not enough
time to panic, let alone evacuate
citizens along the coast or get
ships out to deep water.
