taught: Hung Gar (Grandmaster Wing Lam). The spade was
primarily carried by traveling monks to bury the dead properly
with Buddhist rites. Of course, it could serve as a weapon as
well. It was briefly seen in the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden
Dragon. The spade plays a key role in both Journey to the West
and in Water Margin. I prefer the Hung Gar set to the
Shaolin set. The spade end also symbolizes the sun - when there
is no crescent the weapon is called a convenience spade. Cost: $90 to $175 depending on the steel |
