While the Singapore and the
Malay peninsula are virtually
earthquake fault-free, just to the
south is Sumatra which is easily
one of the most seismically
active regions on Planet Earth.
Besides the infamous Bandar
Aceh event in 2004,
eastern
Sumatra hosted a Richter 7.7 on
7/17/2006 and a Richter 7.5 on
8/8/2007. Near the Andaman
Islands (top left of the map)
there were two 7.2 events on
12/26/2004 and 7/24/2005 as well
as a 7.5 on 8/10/2009.
