Spies are a most important element in war because on them depends an army's ability to move. Sun Tzu - The Art of War
/A/ I have soloed Mt. Whitney before, although 35 years ago. And in August
/B/ I won a lottery for a one day hike up Mt. Whitney for June 20.
This would be the longest day of the year in terms of sunlight - minus the effects of the mountains, of course.
On the downside, effectively no moonlight.
/C/ As I was arriving at the area near the famous Whitney Portal Store (8300') I noticed
/1/ mostly empty parking lots - maybe 15 or 20 vehicles total
/2/ very dark and cold under the trees
/3/ the wind was howling
/4/ the nearby stream was roaring with melt-water
/5/ Even tired as I was from a 300 mile drive, the noise made it just about impossible to sleep
/6/ The Whitney Portal Store was closed
/a/ no place to sign in.
/b/ no advice on trail conditions.
/c/ no hot beverages
