Common access is by the Mt. Whitney Portal trail which starts at about 8,300 feet and is 11 miles long.
It is infamous for the so-called '99 switchbacks'. It has been run with the fastest known time 'car to car'
being by Vernon Morris in 1991 in 200 minutes. There are alternative routes to the top including the Mountaineer's Route.
About 30,000 people hike Mt. Whitney every year - one in three reach the summit.
There are one or two deaths each year and a varying
number of injuries and other conditions that require search and rescue efforts.
