Like tsunamis, volcanoes do not need visas to cross national
boundaries. We would not expect a major eruption inside
Libya. However, Libya has many neighbors in the world who
do have active volcanoes: in or near Africa Algeria, the
Azores, Cameroon, Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Chad,
Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti,
Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar,
Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Egypt, Reunion, Rwanda, Sao Tome,
Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania and Yemen.
To the north Italy especially Mt. Etna as well as Greece and
Spain.
Planet Earth is a very small place. When Tambora in
Indonesia erupted in 1815 there was local damage - 92,000
killed by pyroclastic flows and tsunamis - as well as global
damage. There were no airlines to disrupt then, but average
temperatures fell three degrees, and there were world-wide
crop failures in 1816 known as the Year of No Summer. There
have been over 1,000 small earthquakes near Tambora since
April - a bad sign.
