Libya has two known volcanoes.
Haruj (Al-Haruj al Aswad or Djebel
Haroudj) is at 27.25 N, 17.50 E about
750 kilometers southeast of Tripoli.
Haruj is the dark brown area in the
upper right. It is a very large
collection (150 small volcanoes;
45,000 square kilometers) of small
shield volcanoes and scoria cones
with a summit elevation of 1200
meters. Haruj shows evidence of
eruptions in the last 10,000 years but
nothing in the last century. It needs
more study.
