When one circle
rolls on the outside of another circle the curve described by

outer circle is called an epicycloid. Of interest to tai chi
ruler students is |
the size of the
inner circle you make as you roll the outer circle (the end of
the ruler). |
If the end piece
of the tai chi ruler is 2 inches in diameter and you are rolling
the ruler around |
a smallish six
inch circle the relevant epicycloid looks like the picture
