Tools - Tai Chi ruler - the underlying geometry
When one circle rolls on the outside of another circle the curve described by one given point
on the edge of the outer circle is called an epicycloid. Of interest to tai chi ruler students is
the size of the inner circle you make as you roll the outer circle (the end of the ruler).
If the end piece of the tai chi ruler is 2 inches in diameter and you are rolling the ruler around
a smallish six inch circle the relevant epicycloid looks like the picture (courtesy SAITO) below
