For nearly one hundred years geologists have been drilling into ice to obtain detailed chemical records of past atmospheres.
The majority of such drill cores are from sites in Antarctica and Greenland, although there have been samples obtained from glaciers
in Wyoming (Upper Fremont Glacier), Peru (Quelcccaya Ice Cap and Huascaran), Africa (Mt. Kilimanjaro), China (Guilya Ice cap),
Bolivia (Nevado Sajama), Tibet (Eastern Rongbuk Glacier), Russia (notably the various glaciers in the Altai in southern Russia) and
Alaska (the St. Elias Mountains). The 1816 peak is from the eruption of Mt. Tambora in Indonesia. The source for 1810 is unknown.
