Southwestern African seismicity for the last forty years - each dot is at least one earthquake. The mass of dots descending from the top left is the southernmost portion of the African Rift - where the continent is slowly tearing apart. Note the clusters (1) just offshore of northeastern Mozambique  (2) in the straits between Mozambique and Madagascar and (3) to the extreme southwest. The good news is Madagascar in some scenarios shelters Maputo and much of Mozambique from Indian Ocean tsunamis.
