12/13/2016 Single Whip posture with weapons With the kamas (sickles) we continue to
have the question of whether the upward thrust and the single wrist
will be enough to neutralize the enemy downward strike. In addition,
if the enemy is using a weapon it will frequently rebound into the
kama blade. The kama in the right hand is going to need some sort of
rotation to be able to inflict any damage on the enemy's knee or
thigh. Fans of the sai (gen in Chinese) will argue I should grip the
handle and try to intercept the enemy overhead strike with one of the
prongs. The enemy blade will barely slow down as it shears off the
prong and plunges into you. Even the grip I am using is likely to cost me
some fingers. Sorry readers, while the sai MIGHT be of use against a
staff, forget it when it comes to defending against a saber. Whether
an attacking sword is being used with one or two hands matters, as
does the relative speed of sai versus sword. The good news is the sai
in the right hand can counterattack BUT you would want a serious point
and perhaps microblades on the sai.
