Prelude #35

When it comes to wearing sensors we need to balance actually accurately measuring useful things with not annoying sensitive people. There are two types of sensors - we'd like students during class to wearing a device that measures heartbeat, body temperature, respiration and blood pressure. If we can obtain brain wave (encephalography) data and blood sugar unobstrusively that would be great. The purpose of this set of sensors is to try and keep students safe from seizures, tachycardia, overheating and so on.
The second set of sensors will likely include about thirty separate devices to measure the position over time of the wrists, elbows, shoulders, head, angle of the abdomen, hip, knees, feet and ankles. In addition, because there are a variety of hand configurations in Tai Chi Chuan, it seems likely that students will be asked to wear something like gloves. We would not mind if students choose to keep the first group of sensors active outside of class. That would almost certainly require adding something like GPS location telemetry. What we want to do with the information from the second group is use software to compare the movements of students to the movements of a grandmaster and provide digital movement-level grades.
