Locations and Richters for older events should be regarded as estimates. Note the twin events in 1901 and 1934. Very unusual.
For Tonga, squash, vanilla beans, and yams are the main crops and, with fish, are the major exports. The most significant challenge for Tonga is that it exports about $25 million dollars of produce and imports over $140 million - most of which is food. The imbalance is made up by tourism, subsidies from Australia and New Zealand and overseas remittances. A tsunami would make this a very difficult problem, especially if other nearby countries are impacted. Tonga is thought to hold about $40 million in foreign currencies, but it has over $80 million in external debts. We would certainly advocate investments in solar energy and biofuel cultivation.
