There are conjectured to be several
more submarine volcanoes.
Volcanoes can provide rich soil for
agriculture, as well as mineral
deposits. That bounty sometimes
comes with a price in the form of ash
clouds, lahars, pyroclastic gas flows,
lava and crater collapses. As far as
we are aware, there is no active
monitoring of most of the Tongan
volcanoes.
There were significant eruptions of
both Fonualei and Niuafo'ou in 1846
and 1847, as well as Lofia (part of
Tofua) in 1958-9 .
