12/13/2016 Single Whip posture with weapons Normally, the shield is worn on the left
arm and it would be useful there in this stance to block the enemy's
descending blow, but it would have looked much less dramatic so ...
Unfortunately, while picturesque, it effectively eliminates any
counterstrike from your right hand. The Yin Yang Daggers (shown to the
right) are very odd weapons. In practice a downward strike by the
enemy can do one of several things: (1) miss the dagger to your right
and hit you (not good); (2) slide off the innermost portion of the
semi-circular section and hit you (I regret to report the volunteer
taking whacks at me never entirely missed me when I held the dagger to
the left of my centerline); (3) strike the semi-circular portion
very close to its middle and bounce back upward; (4) slide off the
outermost portion of the semi-circular section and usually bash my
little and ring fingers; (5) slide off the outermost portion of the
semi-circular section and hit the triangular section or simply hit the
triangular section directly; (6) miss the triangular section
completely or (7) pass between the semi-circular and triangular
sections and miss my fingers. This last means I had, during the heat
of combat, due to superior training, kept my grip far from the
triangular section. Pay no attention to my right hand's position ...
Speaking of the right hand, after it has parried the low blow it
may be possible to use the dagger to slice back across the enemy's
thigh, but this will be a forward gash as opposed to a more powerful
backward slash. I conclude the Yin Yang Daggers are rarely seen for a
reason.
