Some unpleasant nightmares
for a Singapore admiral: a LNG
ship or oil tanker explodes or is
blown up; a nuclear weapon
being shipped across the South
China Sea accidentally
detonates - or terrorists
intentionally trigger a such a
bomb. None of these remotely
compare to the energy released
by an earthquake. Shown at left
is a recent photo of the
Qiantang river tidal bore. Even
with state of the art buoys the
warning time for a Malacca
Straits  event would be less
than 60 minutes. For the Java
Sea and Karimata Strait
tsunami waves would likely
arrive minutes after the
warning. If straits, especially
the Phillips Channel, act like
tidal bores civilian and military
ships have no chance.
