A quick glance at the map might prepare readers for our usual dire predictions of a Baltic
Sea tsunami rumbling through the Gulf of Finland and crashing into Tallinn, the capital
and largest city of Estonia, or tearing into the Gulf of Riga and blasting Riga, Latvia's capital
and largest city.
Unlike these two neighboring Baltic republics, Lithuania's capital is safely inland. A major
marine earthquake in the Baltic region would still likely have a substantial impact on
Lithuania's ability to trade. While we certainly agree this sort of catastrophe would be a
tragedy, anything depending on a major seismic event in the region looks very unlikely at
this time.
