Switzerland has been a battlefield for centuries. One general who excelled
there was the Russian Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov (1729-1800), whose name
is familiar to all admirers of the great Carthaginian general Hannibal. Recently
there was yet another epic clash of great strategists. This time it was chess
grandmasters Fabiano Caruana (top ranked in Italy) versus Maxime
Vachier-Lagrave (top ranked in France). They met in combat at Biel in July.
There are poison pawn variants in the Winawer version of the French
Defense and in the Latvian Gambit. This is the Najdorf version of the
Sicilian Defense. Those who already know this game, or those who do not
consider strategic thinking and tactical calculation applicable to
economics and the leadership of nations may skip the next several pages
