A photo of rising Argentine chess star Andrés Carlos Obregón playing against
Uruguayan Grandmaster Andrés Rodríguez Vila. As GM Rodríguez Vila is the
highest rated Uruguayan chess player ever I wanted to use one of his chess victories
to illustrate some points about his country. He has been a grandmaster for years
and plays an aggressive, attacking style, so there were many games to choose from.
I also wanted to find a game that featured a backward pawn being transformed
from a weakness which had to be defended to a strength that spearheaded an
attack. This type of query is not easily parsed by search engines or anything else, so
I was obliged to play about one hundred and sixty of his e-published two hundred
and fifty games - a not unpleasant experience.

For chess fans among our faithful readers the World Championship between Vishwanathan
Anand and Veselin Topalov starts April 23 and can be followed at
http://www.anand-topalov.com/
The game at the recent Linares super-tournament played by Topalov as Black against Levon
Aronian (Topalov is ranked second in the world ; Aronian is ranked fifth in the world; see
http://www.chessdom.com/linares-2010/topalov-aronian-live) is really worth a long look. By
the way, there are usually less than 40 players world-wide ranked 2700 or higher. Magnus
Carlsen of Norway at 2813 and Topalov at 2805 are the only ones above 2800. Anand is
fourth at 2787.
We note with regret the recent death of Seventh World Champion Vasily Smyslov on March 27.
Update 09/26/2023 Obregón is 614th in the world among active players with ratings of 2506 (classical), 2502 (rapid) and 2564 (blitz) while Vila is now third highest in Uruguay (top there is Georg Meier with a rating of 2629) with ratings of 2392, 2448, and 2378.
