Among many achievements by Olathe District students, Kavya Shivashankar
from California Trail Junior High School was the 2009 Scripps National
Spelling Bee champion. The District is adding schools. Surely, this merits a
"job well done" to parents, teachers, staff, students, volunteers. After all, the
nearby Kansas City Missouri District, where enrollment has plummeted from
77,000 to 17,000, is seriously considering closing 28 of 61 schools and firing
hundreds of teachers. If there is any justice, Olathe ought to get rewarded.
      Olathe has the third
highest enrollment in
Kansas behind
Wichita and Shawnee
Mission. Even after
staff reductions the
District employs over
4500 staff and is one of
the larger employers
in the Kansas City
metropolitan area.
Enrollment has been
growing by about 500
students per year and
was 27,434 as of 3/26
(we have to say the
Enrollment History is
a very nice feature on
their website - we wish
everyone had it).
