In a March 7 column in the Kansas City Star (link below) journalist Lewis
Diuguid wrote:

"Some weekdays on my drive to work, I see a few teenagers outside
Northeast High School.

They aren’t loitering, skipping class or causing problems. They’re doing
one of the most reverent things anyone in this country could do after the
sun has come up on a new day.

They’re raising the U.S. flag on a steel pole, which towers above the four-
story high school. For 95 years the school has been this community’s
academic elevator, lifting waves of young citizens and immigrants so they
can reach their American dream.

But what’s clear, even on a drive-by, is the flag is too small for the large
pole. It’s symbolic of the substandard education Kansas City now gives its
kids."

So far, it seems Northeast High School will stay open. But, to deal with a
shortfall of  $50 million 25 or more of the district’s 61 schools will be closed
and 285 teachers and 415 other positions will be cut.  We have a few
qualitative and quantitative comments on that strategy. Summertime has
indeed past for Kansas City and a lot of other schools. But that does not
necessarily mean Spring cannot come again. 08/31/2023 Northeast high is still open - encountering trouble locating its APR scores
