As far as we can tell, the cochleoid curve was first studied by the famed 17th century English
mathematician John Wallis. After what we Americans would call a high school education at
the venerable Felstead School he was a student at Emmanuel College at Cambridge. Following
the custom of the times, after obtaining his master's degree he was elected to a fellowship at
Queens' College and was ordained and became secretary to the clergy at Westminster.
