In 2010 for California in particular and for the United States in general, the
threat is comparable to that faced by Britain seventy years ago. It was a
surreal experience for us to read English, Commonwealth and American
writers of the time speculating on how it might not be so bad to surrender
to Germany.
California and America are in dire straits financially.
We have no Churchill.
Merely not losing will not suffice.
There is no one to surrender to.
There is nowhere to run to
This year will be bad for schools.
Next year will likely be worse.
Schools have no money to invest.
There is no Reginald Mitchell (who died in 1936) designing Spitfires.
There is no Tizard Committee promoting the development of radar.
no capital;
no new technology;
a universal (large-scale) problem with many fates dependent on it
As we say in mathematical economics: NO PROBLEM.
