g5 is NOT Black's best move. In chess and in life there comes a time when one must finally
do something besides move gambit pawns. Of interest in the case of Latvia is whether there
is still time and materials to create a viable economy. While the problem of a persistently
declining population is nearly unique to Latvia, a number of other nations, notably the
United States, have been failing to consider optimal configurations, finite time and
resources, and strategic interactions. To mis-quote the formidable English mathematician
Godfrey Harold Hardy (1877-1947): "Ausus ad abdurdum
risks not only one's country but
those with which it interacts".
What he really said was "Reductio ad absurdum ... is a far
finer gambit than any chess play: a chess player may offer the sacrifice of a pawn or even a
piece, but a
mathematician offers the game."
