Note that it is possible to bypass Kyrgyzstan completely by going to the
north through Kazakhstan or to the south through Tajikistan. These
alternatives are not good for Kyrgyzstan, and are not optimal for
Uzbekistan. The more southerly purple route parallels the Tien Shan
mountains, and has a number of engineering challenges. It would be  
quite spectacular scenery.
