The Valencia metropolitan area is home to 2.3 million people. The real problem is
that the port of Valencia handled 3.6 million TEUs last year (up slightly), while
Barcelona, home to 4.2 million people in its metropolitan area handled 1.8
million TEUs (continuing to decline). Algeciras has far fewer people at risk -
probably 150,000 - but handled 3 million TEUs (also down). Were these three
ports heavily damaged by tsunamis, earthquakes, fires and epidemics it is not
clear how readily Spain could be rebuilt. There would also be huge logistical
knots to untangle in terms of trade from Africa and South America.

            Valencia, one of
our favorite cities,
has some
absolutely
glorious
architecture.
Planet Earth
would be grayer
indeed were
Valencia and
Barcelona and
several other
gems devastated.
