Gravelines is located close to Dunkirk, Calais and the Belgian border. There are six
reactors - all pressurized water types generating 950 megawatts each. They are from the
1970s. There was an incident on August 12, 2009 involving a failure to eject spent fuel
rods and a reactor shutdown. The problem in Japan was that the earthquake initially
disrupted primary power and then enough of the tsunami water cleared the seawall to
flood the reactors and eventually exhaust the secondary power. We would certainly not
expect a major inland earthquake but the complex clearly looks to be a juicy target from
this tsunami-eye view. As long as there is confidence the reactors could be shut down
and kept cool and contained, there should be little to worry about.
