There are sixty-one major islands and hundreds of minor islands in nine groups: the
Osumi, Tokara and Amami islands make up the Satsunan (northern) cluster; the Okinawa,
Kerama and Daito islands make up the Okinawa (central) cluster; and the Miyako, Yaeyama
and Senkaku islands make up the Ryukyu (southern) cluster. The five islands of of
Senkaku group are claimed by both Chinas. There was a Richter 7.0 on February 27 2010 at
25.902°N, 128.417°E. Linguists will recall the Yaeyaman language with its distinctive kaida.
