The danger of sigmoid curves, especially higher order ones, is that if the phenomenon is poorly understood or not enough data is available it may be believed that the relationship is linear. A culture or country and its leaders can find itself in dire straits when surprised by the velocity and influence of non-linear effects. If a disease like malaria spreads arithmetically that's bad enough, but when a far more lethal disease like the Black Death spreads geometrically whole civilizations and the species itself may be in mortal danger.
