The Academic Performance Index (API) is an annual measure of the academic performance and
progress of schools in California. The API is a score on a scale of 200 to 1,000 with a goal of all schools
approaching 800. For example, the 2008 Base is calculated from results of statewide testing in spring
2008 but is released in May 2009. This is an absurd delay. The Growth API is released after the Base API
but is calculated from test results from the following year  and was released in August 2009. If there are
no specific scores by year, subject and teacher, consider how much less useful one score for a whole
school is. Nevertheless, we provide Knightsen's scores. We caution that sustained progress even in such
a fairly artificial measure is not common in California or nearly anywhere else. Most of the time when
progress like this occurs it is due to regrouping, pushing less able students into the County Office of
Education, excepting potentially low scoring students from being tested, precise timing of suspensions,
fraud, cheating and a few other equally distasteful activities. As nearly as we can determine, none of
that occurred at Knightsen - congratulations are in order for doing what is supposed to be done by
everyone.
