Puerto Rico Earthquakes 2019 - 2020
Roman Catholics
are obliged to attend Mass every Sunday - that would mean usually 52
times per year, although there would be 53 Sundays in a year like
2012, which is a leap year that starts on a Sunday. Easter is always
on a Sunday, but there are six other holy days of obligation: January
1; Ascension Thursday - forty days after Easter; August 15; November
1; December 8; and December 25. In recent years American
Catholics have shifted some of these days to fall on Sundays. In
Europe some countries celebrate additional holy days: January 6;
March 19; June 29; and Corpus Christi, which is the Thursday after
Trinity Sunday, which is, in turn, the Sunday after Pentecost, which
is itself 50 days after Easter.
On November 1, 1755 Roman Catholic
churches all over the world were crowded as it was a high holy day -
the Feast of All Saints. Few were more crowded than the Cathedral of
Saint Mary Major in Lisbon in Portugal. The Diocese of Lisbon was
created in the 4th century, and is one of only four Patriarchates.
Building of the Cathedral itself was started in 1147. The Cathedral
survived the major earthquakes of 1321 and 1531, but was severely
damaged by the earthquake and tsunamis of 1755. The Convent of Our
Lady of Mount Carmel and its accompanying Gothic church were
devastated by the 1755 events, and have remained largely unrepaired as
a memorial.
